The Gaden Namgyal Lhatse which means ‘the peak of the heavenly abode of Joyfulness and victory’ is commonly known as Tawang Monastery. Situated at the elevation of nearly 10000 feet and set amidst unmatched natural beauty this monastery was founded by Merak Lama Lodge Gyatso in the year 1680-81. The monastery belongs to the Gelug school of Mahayana Buddhism. Tawang Monastery has become the most important institution in the spiritual as well as the socio-cultural life of the people of the region. Apart from its spiritual and historical significance, it is quite acclaimed for its architectural brilliance. The Monastery is a treasure trove of old Buddhist scriptures (including the gold-lettered ones) some very valuable and old manuscripts, books, murals, and images. The 18 feet high statue of Lord Buddha inside the huge assembly hall is a sight to remember. The monastery offers a majestic view of the snow-capped Himalayan Mountains.
Tawang War Memorial:
This 40 feet structure was built in the memory of the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1962 Indo-China war.
Gyangong Ani Gompa:
Situated 10 km north-west of Tawang Monastery. Set in the backdrop of the pristine beauty of Himalayan mountains it is actually a Nunnery.
Bramadung Chung Ani Gompa:
Approximately 10 km from Tawang Monastery. It is said to be the oldest Ani Gompa of Tawang.
Urgelling Gompa:
5km southeast of the Tawang Township there is a monastery founded by Ugyen Sangpo and is quite popular among the locals. This is called Urgelling Gompa.
Sangetsar Lake:
Surrounded by the great Himalaya this is one of the most beautiful high altitude lakes in India. Apart from the visual treat, it is considered as holy by the Buddhists. The lake is known as Madhuri Lake after the shooting of Bollywood hit movie Koyla where Madhuri Dixit played the lead role and performed a dance number beside the lake. Pankang Teng Tso (PT Tso lake):
The view of this lake is breathtaking. With every week the lake and its surroundings take a different color. The lake is surrounded by Snow-capped mountains and rhododendron forest. This is 18 km from Tawang.
Sela pass:
Located at a distance of 78 km from Tawang this pass connects Tawang to the rest of the country. It is situated at a height of nearly 14000 feet. Sela pass offers a stunning view of the surroundings.
Chak Zam Bridge:
About 25 km from the town over the Tawang-Churiver this was built to make a passage through Kotpi and Mukto. This was built during 1420-30 by a disciple of the 1st Dalai Lama.
Buddha Park:
Located at the heart of the town this beautiful park offers a panoramic view of the whole town and surroundings.
