Meghalaya:

 

Meghalaya is located in the northeastern part of India and its capital is Shillong. Normally travelers spent 4 to 5 days in Meghalaya but the duration can be extended also as there are so many places to visit in Meghalaya. There are mainly three tourist regions in Meghalaya – Khasi hills, Jayantiya Hills and Garo hills. All these three regions are having their own charm and uniqueness.

 

How to reach Meghalaya:

 

In order to visit Meghalaya tourist will have to start the journey from Guwahati. Guwahati is the gateway to north-east India. The first destination of Meghalaya is Shillong and Shillong is about 100 km away from Guwahati. While you will be traveling to Shillong, enroot you will be able to see the beautiful Umium lake which is about 15 km before Shillong city. Some travelers opt to stay nearby Umium lake and travel to nearby places, but we recommend you to stay at Shillong city only. You can just scroll around the local Shillong market (Police Bazar) on the day you reach Shillong and make shopping.

 

Must visit tourist places in Meghalaya:

 

Shillong:

Shillong is the capital of the state called Meghalaya and is a very beautiful hills station. Shillong is located at an altitude of about 1500 m from the sea level and there are so many good sightseeing places in Shillong. Some of the best sightseeing of Shillong are Elephant Falls, Sweet Falls, Beadon & Bishop Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Ward’s Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture, Golf Course. etc.

Note: The best time to visit Shilling is from February to early June and November to early January.

Cherapunjee (Sohra):

 If you are visiting Meghalaya you must visit Cherapunjee. The actual name of Cherapunjee is Sohra which is about 60 km from Shillong. It takes around 2 hours to reach Cherapunjee by cab from Shillong. Cherapunjee experiences early sunrise and sunset. We recommend you to start the journey from Shillong early in the morning around 5 to 6 am so you get enough time to visit in Cherapunjee. Since Shillong is a city so there might be a lot of traffic after 7:30 am so it is beneficial to start the journey as early as possible.

In the outskirt of Cherapunjee, you will visit Wah Kaba waterfalls. The main tourist attraction of Sohra is waterfalls.

Dainthlen Falls is another great waterfall in Cherapunjee. Normally we experience the waterfall from the bottom of the waterfall. But the specialty of Dainthlen waterfall is, this waterfall can be seen from the same level where the water starts falling from the mountain.  there is another waterfall called Sawdong waterfall which is located near Dainthlen waterfalls.

Nohkalikai Falls is a must place visit from Cherapunjee.

Note: We recommend you to carry a binocular with you while you are visiting this waterfall because the waterfall viewpoint is a little away.

Seven Sisters fall and Eco-park is located nearby. These are also good tourist points in Cherapunjee.

Kynrem waterfall is another very beautiful waterfall. You will see the beauty of falling water from mountains like staircases in many layers.

In Cherapunjee there are many caves. You should not miss the opportunity to visit these beautiful caves. Some of the important caves of Cherapunjee are Mawsmai cave and Arwah Cave. It's an awesome experience to visit caves in Cherapunjee. It takes around 8 to 10 minutes to complete the entire cave from start to endpoint.

Note:  Please note that the start and endpoint of these caves are different.   

Double Decker living root bridge is another great attraction in Sohra. To reach this bridge you have to walk about 3500 steps down this mountain. This is a full day activity. Once you reach the bridge you will really like the same. The bridge is made of roots of multiple living trees. You can also experience the waterfall at the Double Decker root bridge. The rainbow waterfall is another good waterfall which is about 1 – 1.5 hours walking distance from the double-decker bridge. These two sightseeing places are only visited by trek and you will not be able to visit these places by car.

Note: You can stay about 2 nights at Sahara to visit all the above sightseeing places and thereafter you can visit the other parts of Meghalaya.

Dowki:

Dowki is about 2.5 hours drive to Cherapunjee. The main attraction of Dowki is the river of Dowki which is having the crystal clear water. You can do boating on the river. This place is located close to the Bangladesh Border. The depth of the river is about 4 feet. The water is so clear, you can see the surface of the river through the water.

Note: December to February is the best time to visit Dowki when you will be able to see the cleanest river water.

You can also visit Shnongpdeng (4.6 km from Dowki)  where you can do adventurous water activities. Enjoy the water sports in Shnongpdeng.

Mawlinong village:

Mawlinong village is the cleanest village in Asia. It is located in the East Khasi hills and about 80 km away from Shillong. There are some good sightseeing places in Mawlinong such as living root bridge, balancing bolder, etc. This village is known for its cleanliness and the location is closed to Indo-Bangladesh border.

Jowai (Jayantiya hills):

After visiting Shnongpdeng you can directly go to Jowai and en-route you will be able to see many beautiful waterfalls. Dowki to Jowai is around 55 km. You can make one night stay at Jowai and enjoy the local cuisine.

Laitlum Grand Canyon:

Laitlum grand canyon can be visited from Shillong only. This is one of the best viewpoints in Meghalaya. Once you visit this place you will just feel like you are standing inside the clouds. On a clear day, you will be able to see a very good view of this point.

Shillong Peak (Closed on Wednesday):

Shillong peak is also a good tourist point. You will be able to see the entire city from the Shillong Peak.  This point is located in the upper Shillong forest and it has an altitude of around 2000 M from the sea level. This place is just 10 km away from Shillong you can experience a clean and fresh environment at Shillong peak.

Tura:

Tura is about 200 km away from Guwahati. Tura is located in Garo hills. In Garo Hills, tourism is in the nascent stage and it is not as developed as the Khasi hills tourism infrastructure. You will be able to see the unexplored region of Meghalaya in Tura. Tura is the perfect destination for adventure seekers.  Some of the great sightseeing points in Tura are Pelga falls in west Garo hills, Rongmeram Falls, Hoolock Gibbon Centre, Daribokgre (40 km from Tura).

Balpakhram National Park:

Balpakhram National park is located about 170 km from Tura and it is in South Garo hills. You can stay at Balpakhram National park for 1 to 2 nights as per your preference.

Best Time to Travel:

 

If you want to explore waterfalls you must visit Meghalaya during monsoon time.  You will be able to experience the rainy season of Meghalaya and also the waterfalls will be in full flow.  Winter is also a good season for traveling to Meghalaya. You can visit Meghalaya at any time between October to June.

 

The climate in Meghalaya:

 

Meghalaya is known as the wettest place on the earth. The western part of Meghalaya (Garo Hills) experiences high temperatures throughout the year. The hills station of Shillong experiences comparatively low temperatures. The temperature of this place hardly crosses 28-degree centigrade. The maximum rainfalls occur in Cherapunjee and Mawsynram.
