Toy Train in Darjeeling

A visit to Darjeeling is incomplete without a ride in the toy-train of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). The miniature train, given heritage status by UNESCO, covers the distance of 88 km between New Jalpaiguri station and Darjeeling. The little steam train made its maiden trip in 1880.Motley though the toy train is not the fastest means of transport, the journey by it is rather defatiguing, for it offers fabulous scenic view of the hills and possible interaction with a crowd of the local people. The train is now pulled by diesel engines to enhance speed. Earlier one needed to carry food along. However, since November 2001, the DHR has arranged food for its passengers.
Shorter trips between Darjeeling and Ghoom are also arranged during tourist season.
The most interesting part of the journey is the five switchbacks ('Z' reverse) and four complete loops including the Batasia loop, the hunting ground for the photo-shooters.

About Tripsy

The journey started more than a decade ago when a financial consultant, a social activist and a biology researcher came together to start a business in tourism that none of them knew about. But travel is something they loved and enjoyed, and so they decided to change the paradigms in their own way. And they remarked “travel is more than a profession, it’s a passion”. Read More [+]
